Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings in just any place you see; you must offer them only in the place the LORD will choose in one of your tribal territories, and there you shall do all that I command you.

Significance

Ezra 6:18 records that priests and Levites were appointed "to the service of God in Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses" (כִּכְתָב סֵפֶר מֹשֶׁה, kikhtav sefer Mosheh). This explicit appeal to Mosaic authority connects to Deuteronomy 12:13-14, which prohibits offering sacrifices "in just any place you see" but commands worship only at "the place the LORD will choose" (הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִבְחַר יְהוָה). The Ezra passage demonstrates that post-exilic worship personnel serve specifically at Jerusalem because that is the place YHWH chose, fulfilling the Deuteronomic principle of centralized worship. The phrase "according to what is written in the Book of Moses" asserts direct continuity between second temple practice and Pentateuchal legislation.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — Deuteronomy's restriction of sacrifice to the place the LORD would choose (Deut 12:13-14) advances into second-temple institution: priests and Levites are appointed "to the service of God in Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses," the centralization command now staffed and operating at the chosen place after exile.
