Earlier text
you are to take some of the firstfruits of all your produce from the soil of the land that the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name,
Deuteronomy 26:2 requires Israel to bring firstfruits (רֵאשִׁית, reshit) of their produce to the place God will choose, and Nehemiah 10:35 records the post-exilic community pledging to "bring the firstfruits of our land and of every fruit tree to the house of the LORD year by year." Both texts link the offering of firstfruits to the authorized worship site—the "place the LORD will choose" in Deuteronomy becomes the rebuilt temple in Nehemiah. The restored community's pledge to resume this practice demonstrates that the Deuteronomic agricultural worship system remained normative for Israel's self-understanding even after exile disrupted its observance for generations.
