In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I warned them against selling food on that day.
Now behold, you, a brood of sinners, have risen up in place of your fathers to further stoke the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.
Significance
Numbers 32:14 warns the Transjordanian tribes that they risk adding to God's wrath (חֲרוֹן אַף, charon 'af) against Israel by repeating the sin of the spy generation who discouraged the people. Nehemiah 13:15 describes the post-exilic community repeating its own ancestors' failures through Sabbath commerce: treading winepresses and loading donkeys on the Sabbath. Both texts share the pattern of a new generation replicating the covenant violations that provoked divine judgment on the previous generation. The connection illustrates the prophetic concern that Israel's sin is not merely individual but generational -- each iteration compounds the national guilt.
