Because the Israelites are My servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt, they are not to be sold as slaves.
Leviticus 25:42 prohibits permanent enslavement of Israelites "because the Israelites are My servants." Nehemiah 5:11 records Nehemiah demanding the restoration of confiscated property: "Please restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the percentage of the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you have been assessing them." Nehemiah's reform applies the Levitical principle that God's servants must not be exploited by their own kinsmen, extending it to address usury and land-seizure in the post-exilic community. The demand for immediate restitution — not gradual reform — reflects the urgency of the Levitical standard that fellow Israelites must be treated as brothers, not as economic commodities.
