And they found written in the Law, which the LORD had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month. So they proclaimed this message and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written." And the people went out, brought back branches, and made booths on their own rooftops, in their courtyards, in the court of the house of God, and in the squares by the Water Gate and by the Gate of Ephraim.
On the first day you are to gather the fruit of majestic trees, the branches of palm trees, and the boughs of leafy trees and of willows of the brook. And you are to rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days.
Significance
Nehemiah 8:14-16 records the people discovering in the Torah that they should "dwell in booths" (סֻכּוֹת, sukkot) during the feast of the seventh month and gather branches — directly implementing the Leviticus 23:40 command to "gather the fruit of majestic trees, the branches of palm trees, and the boughs of leafy trees and of willows of the brook." The people were sent to the hill country to "bring back branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees" to construct booths, closely following the Levitical botanical list. Nehemiah 8:17 notes that "from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this," suggesting that this post-exilic Sukkot observance represented a recovery of the festival's original Mosaic form after centuries of neglect or partial observance.

Longitudinal Theme — ruled against the proposed Redemptive-Historical Progression: the post-exilic gathering of branches is direct implementation of Leviticus 23:40's botanical command, the Tabernacles/dwelling-with-God thread (running to John 7 and Revelation 21:3) being recovered rather than a new redemptive act advancing the storyline.
