Psalm 106:32-33BSB

At the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them. For they rebelled against His Spirit, and Moses spoke rashly with his lips.

Earlier text

Deuteronomy 1:37BSB

The LORD was also angry with me on your account, and He said, "Not even you shall enter the land.

Significance

Moses recalls that "The LORD was also angry with me on your account" (הִתְאַנַּף יְהוָה בִּי, hit'annaf YHWH bi) and barred him from entering the land, and Psalm 106:32-33 retells this same episode at the waters of Meribah, noting that "trouble came to Moses because of them" since "they rebelled against His Spirit, and Moses spoke rashly with his lips." The psalmist adds the detail that Moses was provoked to speak rashly (וַיְבַטֵּא, vayevate'), providing a more explicit identification of Moses's specific failure than Deuteronomy does. Together, the passages present Moses's exclusion as both a consequence of Israel's provocation and a solemn demonstration that even the mediator of the covenant is not exempt from divine discipline.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — Moses's "The LORD was also angry with me on your account" (Deut 1:37) is retold in Psalm 106:32-33 with the added diagnosis that the people "rebelled against His Spirit" and Moses "spoke rashly," the Deuteronomic memory deepened as it is carried into confession — Meribah recited as proof that Israel's history requires a Mediator whom provocation cannot break.
