Earlier text

So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD said to my father David: 'I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the house for My Name.'

Significance

Psalm 110:1 envisions the LORD's anointed sitting at God's right hand while enemies are subdued. In 1 Kings 5:5 (MT 5:19), Solomon declares, "So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD said to my father David: 'I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the house for My Name'" — the throne-succession and house-building promise that echoes 2 Samuel 7:13. This is set against the rest Solomon has just recounted in the previous verse: "the LORD my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or crisis" (1 Kings 5:4; the noun rendered "rest" is מְנוּחָה, menuchah). The connection to Psalm 110 is the enthroned Davidic son who builds God's house from a throne of rest — a partial, historical realization of the reign Psalm 110 promises the messianic king-priest, though the psalm's scope ultimately exceeds what Solomon achieved. The irony sharpens later: the very king whose reign faced no שָׂטָן (satan, "adversary," 1 Kings 5:4) sees the LORD raise up an adversary against him in 1 Kings 11:14, exposing Solomon's rest as temporary compared to the permanent dominion Psalm 110 envisions.
