Psalms 81:16 → Deuteronomy 32:14

Allusion

Later text

Psalms 81:16BSB

But I would feed you the finest wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

Earlier text

Deuteronomy 32:14BSB

with curds from the herd and milk from the flock, with the fat of lambs, with rams from Bashan, and goats, with the choicest grains of wheat. From the juice of the finest grapes you drank the wine.

Significance

Psalm 81:16 promises feeding with "the finest wheat" (חֵלֶב חִטָּה, chelev chittah, literally "the fat of wheat") — the same phrase used in Deuteronomy 32:14 where God "fed him with... the finest wheat" (חֵלֶב חִטָּה). The distinctive phrase chelev chittah appears in both texts to describe God's richest provision — the fattest, most choice portion of the grain harvest. The Song of Moses (Deut 32) uses it to describe what God actually gave Israel in the land, while Psalm 81 uses it to describe what God would give if Israel would only listen, creating a pattern of abundance conditioned on obedience.
