Isaiah 52:1 → Deuteronomy 23:3-6

Allusion

Later text

Isaiah 52:1BSB

Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion! Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, holy city! For the uncircumcised and unclean will no longer enter you.

Earlier text

Deuteronomy 23:3-6BSB

No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even to the tenth generation. For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim to curse you. Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam, and the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you. You are not to seek peace or prosperity from them as long as you live.

Significance

The temple theme connects Isaiah 52 to Deuteronomy 23, revealing Israel's understanding of sacred space where God dwells with his people. This anticipates Christ, who is the true temple (John 2:19-21) where God and humanity meet, and whose body, the church, becomes the dwelling place of God by the Spirit (Eph 2:19-22).
