So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be your Jubilee, when each of you is to return to his property and to his clan.
Isaiah 61:2 proclaims "the year of the LORD's favor (שְׁנַת רָצוֹן לַיהוָה, shenat ratson la-YHWH) and the day of our God's vengeance," drawing on the Jubilee legislation of Leviticus 25:10 where the fiftieth year is proclaimed a year of דְּרוֹר (deror, "liberty/release") throughout the land. Isaiah transforms the cyclical Jubilee institution into a singular eschatological event combining mercy ("the year of the LORD's favor") and judgment ("the day of our God's vengeance"). While Leviticus 25 mandated periodic economic reset every fifty years, Isaiah envisions a definitive, once-for-all intervention in which God simultaneously liberates His people and judges their oppressors — the ultimate Jubilee that no agricultural calendar could contain.
