Quotation

Later text

Isaiah 65:25BSB

The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but the food of the serpent will be dust. They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain," says the LORD.

Earlier text

Isaiah 11:6-9BSB

The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the goat; the calf and young lion and fatling will be together, and a little child will lead them. The cow will graze with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play by the cobra's den, and the toddler will reach into the viper's nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the sea is full of water.

Significance

Isaiah 65:25 recycles the peaceable-kingdom oracle of Isaiah 11:6-9 almost verbatim — "The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox" (65:25) reproduces "The wolf will live with the lamb… and the lion will eat straw like the ox" (11:6-7), and the closing clause "They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain" (65:25) is a word-for-word repetition of 11:9 (Hebrew lōʾ-yārēʿû wəlōʾ-yašḥîtû bəḵol-har qodšî). In its original setting, Isaiah 11:6-9 describes the harmony of the predator/prey order under the reign of the Spirit-anointed shoot from the stump of Jesse (11:1-5) — the Davidic-root's kingdom in which creation's enmity is undone. Isaiah 65:25 deliberately draws that same oracle into the new-creation horizon announced at 65:17 ("behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth"), so that the messianic-kingdom peace of chapter 11 and the cosmic re-creation of chapter 65 are revealed to be one and the same eschatological reality: the reign of David's root is the renewed Eden. This is Redemptive-Historical Progression — Isaiah advances his own earlier oracle to its cosmic terminus, not a type escalating to an antitype but one prophetic vision unfolded into its full scope — undergirded by the Longitudinal Theme of new creation as Eden restored (the serpent's curse of Gen 3:14, "dust shall be the serpent's food," is reversed at 65:25's "the food of the serpent will be dust"). The telos: this peaceable kingdom is no abstract utopia but the personal reign of the crucified and risen Branch (Rom 15:12; Rev 5:6; 22:16), under whose rule the wolf lies down with the lamb because the Lamb who was slain now sits enthroned. To behold this is to long for it — to taste the safety of a world where nothing harms or destroys, and to find that safety is a Person, the Prince of Peace in whom the whole groaning creation will be set free (Rom 8:19-23), so that the new-creation hope becomes not merely awaited but desired.
