Jeremiah 19:5-6 → 2 Chronicles 28:3

Allusion

Later text

Jeremiah 19:5-6BSB

They have built high places to Baal on which to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal—something I never commanded or mentioned, nor did it even enter My mind. So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.

Earlier text

2 Chronicles 28:3BSB

Moreover, Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of Hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.

Significance

Jeremiah 19:5-6 pronounces judgment on child sacrifice in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, declaring that God will rename it "the Valley of Slaughter" (גֵּיא הַהֲרֵגָה, gei haharegah), while 2 Chronicles 28:3 records the historical precedent of King Ahaz performing these same abominations in that valley. Both texts use the language of burning children in fire (Jeremiah: שָׂרַף בָּאֵשׁ, saraf ba'esh; Chronicles: בָּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ, ba'er ba'esh) and locate the practice in the Valley of Hinnom. Jeremiah's extended passage (vv. 5-6) adds the prophetic declaration that God "never commanded or mentioned" such sacrifice, distancing Yahweh worship absolutely from Canaanite child sacrifice. The valley's transformation from a site of abomination to a symbol of judgment (later becoming "Gehenna" in Jewish and NT usage) begins in Jeremiah's renaming oracle.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — the pair moves from Ahaz's historical precedent of burning his sons in the Valley of Hinnom (2 Chr 28:3) to Jeremiah's oracle sealing that valley's fate as the Valley of Slaughter (Jer 19:5-6); royal apostasy hardens into national practice and then into irreversible judgment, a progression in Judah's covenant history that later canonical usage (Gehenna) carries forward.
