Then I said to the priests and to all this people, "This is what the LORD says: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, 'Look, very soon now the articles from the house of the LORD will be brought back from Babylon.' They are prophesying to you a lie.
Nebuchadnezzar also took to Babylon some of the articles from the house of the LORD, and he put them in his temple in Babylon.
Significance
Jeremiah 27:16 addresses false prophets who promise that the temple vessels (כְּלֵי בֵית יְהוָה, kelei beit YHWH) taken to Babylon will be swiftly returned, while 2 Chronicles 36:7 records the historical fact that "Nebuchadnezzar also carried some of the articles of the house of the LORD to Babylon and placed them in his temple." Jeremiah contradicts the false prophets' optimistic timeline, prophesying that the remaining vessels will also be taken to Babylon and will stay there "until the day I attend to them" (27:22). The Chronicler's account confirms Jeremiah's prediction — the vessels were indeed removed — and Ezra 1:7-11 later records their return under Cyrus. The vessels become a tangible symbol of the exile's reality and God's faithfulness to restore what was taken.
