Exodus 20:13BSB
You shall not murder.
Exodus 20:13 prohibits taking human life, and Jeremiah 7:5 calls for the positive counterpart: "truly practice justice" (מִשְׁפָּט, mishpat) between one another. Jeremiah's temple sermon transforms the negative prohibition of the sixth commandment into a demand for constructive social ethics—it is not enough to refrain from murder; one must actively pursue justice. The prophet grounds the security of the temple in covenant obedience, making clear that the commandments are not merely cultic requirements but the social foundation upon which God's presence among His people depends.
