Jeremiah 7:5 → Exodus 20:15

Jeremiah 7:5BSB

For if you really correct your ways and deeds, if you act justly toward one another,

Significance

Exodus 20:15 commands "You shall not steal" (לֹא תִגְנֹב, lo tignov), and Jeremiah 7:5 conditions the people's security in the land on truly practicing justice (מִשְׁפָּט, mishpat). The prophet treats the Decalogue's property protections as foundational to the social order that permits God to dwell among His people—when theft and exploitation replace justice, the covenant itself is jeopardized. Jeremiah's demand for justice between neighbors is the positive counterpart to the eighth commandment's prohibition, revealing that God requires not just restraint from taking but active commitment to fair dealing.
