You shall not murder.
Deuteronomy 5:17-20 lists four commandments: "You shall not murder… You shall not commit adultery… You shall not steal… You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." Jeremiah 7:9 catalogues the identical sins in his temple sermon: "Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury…?" (הֲגָנֹב רָצֹחַ וְנָאֹף וְהִשָּׁבֵעַ לַשֶּׁקֶר, haganov ratzoach vena'of vehishavea' lashaqer). The prophet directly echoes the Decalogue's prohibitions to demonstrate that Judah is systematically violating the covenant's core ethical requirements while continuing to offer sacrifices. Jeremiah's rhetorical question exposes the absurdity of seeking temple refuge while breaking the commandments the temple enshrines, making his sermon a Deuteronomic covenant lawsuit against Judah's presumptuous worship.
