Ezekiel 20:9 → Psalm 106:8

Allusion

Later text

Ezekiel 20:9BSB

But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they were living, in whose sight I had revealed Myself to Israel by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

Earlier text

Psalm 106:8BSB

Yet He saved them for the sake of His name, to make His power known.

Significance

Both Ezekiel 20:9 and Psalm 106:8 describe God's decision to act "for the sake of His name" (לְמַעַן שְׁמִי, lema'an shemi) rather than destroying Israel in Egypt/at the Red Sea. The shared theological logic is identical: Israel deserved judgment, but God restrained His wrath to prevent His name from being profaned (חָלַל, chalal) among the nations. Psalm 106:8 adds that God acted "to make His mighty power known," while Ezekiel 20:9 specifies that God's concern was His reputation "in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived." Both texts portray divine mercy rooted not in Israel's merit but in God's jealousy for His own name and covenantal reputation.
