Ezekiel 34:23 → Leviticus 26:4

Allusion

Later text

Ezekiel 34:23BSB

I will appoint over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them. He will feed them and be their shepherd.

Earlier text

Leviticus 26:4BSB

I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.

Significance

Ezekiel 34:26-27 promises under the Davidic shepherd that God will send "showers in season" and "The trees of the field will give their fruit, and the land will yield its produce," echoing the covenant blessing of Leviticus 26:4: "I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit." The shared vocabulary of seasonal rain (גֶּשֶׁם, geshem), fruitful trees, and abundant harvest directly maps the Levitical covenant blessings onto the messianic age. Ezekiel thus envisions the Davidic shepherd's reign as the restoration of the original Sinai covenant blessings that Israel forfeited through disobedience.

Connection Method(s)
Promise-Fulfillment + Longitudinal Theme — the conditional Sinai blessings of Leviticus 26:4 ("rains in their season... the land will yield its produce") are promised their final, permanent realization under the Davidic shepherd (Promise-Fulfillment), and the covenant-blessing motif itself develops from conditional stipulation to messianically mediated gift across the two eras (Longitudinal Theme).
