Significance

Numbers 29:12 and Ezekiel 45:25 date the same feast in the same words: the fifteenth day (חֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר, chamishshah asar) of the seventh month (הַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי, hachodesh hashevi'i), a חַג (chag, "feast") observed שִׁבְעַת יָמִים (shiv'at yamim, "seven days"). Numbers wraps that date in two requirements Ezekiel does not repeat. It calls for a מִקְרָא־קֹדֶשׁ (miqra-qodesh, "sacred assembly") and forbids all regular work — the gathered congregation, stopped from its labour, is the frame within which the offerings are brought. Ezekiel's festival calendar contains no assembly language at all and no work prohibition, neither at Passover nor in the seventh month. What it contains is a schedule of offerings and the name of the man who pays for them. The reduction is deliberate and consistent across Ezekiel 45:18-25. The prophet's interest is not in what the people do on the day but in what has been done to make the day possible: the sanctuary purified (45:18-20), atonement made (כָּפַר, kaphar, 45:17), the prince providing (45:22-24). Numbers assumes a people who can assemble at a standing temple; Ezekiel writes to people who cannot, and grounds the feast in something they do not have to supply. That is the order the gospel keeps. The assembly is real and commanded — "let us not neglect meeting together" (Hebrews 10:25) — but it gathers around a work already finished rather than in order to finish it, which is why the gathering can be gladness instead of dread.
