Allusion

Later text

Ezekiel 6:4BSB

Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars will be smashed; and I will cast down your slain before your idols.

Earlier text

Leviticus 26:30BSB

I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and heap your lifeless bodies on the lifeless remains of your idols; and My soul will despise you.

Significance

Ezekiel 6:4 prophesies the destruction of Israel's altars and חַמָּנִים (chammanim, "incense altars/sun pillars"), directly echoing Leviticus 26:30 where God threatens to "destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and pile your corpses on the corpses of your idols." Both passages use nearly identical vocabulary: גִּלּוּלִים (gillulim, "idols"), בָּמוֹת (bamot, "high places"), and the image of slain bodies cast before their idols. Ezekiel announces that the long-threatened Levitical covenant curse is now being executed against Judah's syncretic worship sites.
