Daniel 9:11 → Deuteronomy 29:20-21

Allusion

Later text

Daniel 9:11BSB

All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have sinned against You.

Earlier text

Deuteronomy 29:20-21BSB

The LORD will never be willing to forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse written in this book will fall upon him. The LORD will blot out his name from under heaven and single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.

Significance

Daniel 9:11 confesses that "the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses" (הָאָלָה וְהַשְּׁבוּעָה הַכְּתוּבָה בְּתוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה, ha'alah vehashevu'ah hakketuvah betorat Mosheh) has been "poured out on us." This directly references Deuteronomy 29:20-21, which warns that "every curse written in this book" (כָּל־הָאָלָה הַכְּתוּבָה, kol-ha'alah hakketuvah) will fall on the covenant-breaker. Daniel uses the identical phrase "written curse" to identify the exile as the specific fulfillment of Deuteronomy's covenant sanctions. The prayer thus reads Israel's historical catastrophe as the enacted text of Torah -- not arbitrary divine wrath, but the outworking of covenant terms Israel had accepted at Moab.
