Isaiah 42:5BSB
This is what God the LORD says—He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk in it:
Zechariah 12:1 describes God as the one who "stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him," a threefold creation formula that closely parallels Isaiah 42:5: "God the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath (נְשָׁמָה, neshamah) to the people on it and spirit (רוּחַ, ruach) to those who walk in it." Both texts pair cosmological creation (heavens, earth) with the creation of human spirit/breath, using this as a theological preamble to oracles of eschatological significance. Isaiah 42:5 introduces the Servant who will bring justice to the nations; Zechariah 12:1 introduces the oracle of the pierced one and the cleansing fountain. The shared creation-preamble form signals that what follows carries the full weight of the Creator's authority.
