He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest branch. He washes his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.
Zechariah 9:9 describes the messianic king "riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey" (עַל־חֲמוֹר וְעַל־עַיִר בֶּן־אֲתֹנוֹת, al-chamor ve'al-ayir ben-atonot), echoing Jacob's blessing of Judah in Genesis 49:11: "He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest branch" (אֹסְרִי לַגֶּפֶן עִירֹה, osri lagefen iroh). Both texts associate a royal Judahite figure with a donkey/colt (עַיִר, ayir). In Genesis 49:10-11, the "Shiloh" figure to whom the nations' allegiance belongs is depicted in abundant prosperity, tethering his donkey amid overflowing vineyards. Zechariah transforms this image: the king comes riding the donkey rather than merely tethering it, and comes "humble" (עָנִי, ani) rather than in wealth. The allusion links Zechariah's humble king to Judah's ancient royal promise while redefining messianic kingship as characterized by humility rather than opulence. Genesis 49:11 further pictures this abundance in vivid terms — the ruler "washes his garments in wine" — while Zechariah 9:9 completes its own portrait by calling the coming king "righteous and victorious" as well as humble, together yielding a composite figure who unites royal triumph with lowliness. A seating note: Zechariah 9:9 carries no vine imagery of its own — what this pair certifies is the messianic-kingship reading of Genesis 49:11's שֹׂרֵק oracle, not the vine motif itself; in the vine trajectory (TT 168) it is accordingly held as a supporting kingship-anchor, not a CRITICAL vine link.
