"A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me?" says the LORD of Hosts to you priests who despise My name. "But you ask, 'How have we despised Your name?'
"Tell Aaron and his sons: This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:
Significance
Malachi 1:6-2:2 warns the priests that God will "curse your blessings" (וְאָרוֹתִי אֶת בִּרְכוֹתֵיכֶם, ve'aroti eth birkhothekhem), a devastating reversal of Numbers 6:23-27's priestly blessing mandate where Aaron and his sons were commanded to bless (בָּרַךְ, barakh) the people by placing God's name upon them. Numbers 6:27 concludes: "So they shall put My name on the Israelites, and I will bless them." Malachi's threat to turn priestly blessings into curses inverts the Aaronic benediction itself -- the very priests appointed to be channels of divine blessing have become instruments of divine curse because they despise the name they were commissioned to invoke. Numbers 6:24-26 supplies the blessing's own words — "May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace" — the very benediction Malachi's threatened curse directly undoes.
