"Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming," says the LORD of Hosts.
A voice of one calling: "Prepare the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
Significance
Malachi 3:1 announces a messenger who will "prepare the way" (פִּנָּה דֶרֶךְ, pinnah derekh) before the Lord, echoing Isaiah 40:3's cry: "Prepare the way (פַּנּוּ דֶּרֶךְ, pannu derekh) for the LORD in the wilderness." Both texts use the root פנה (panah, "to clear/prepare") with דֶּרֶךְ (derekh, "way/road"), creating a strong verbal link. Isaiah's voice calls for highway preparation for Yahweh's triumphant return from exile; Malachi identifies this forerunner as "My messenger" who precedes the "Lord whom you seek" coming suddenly to His temple. Malachi thus reinterprets Isaiah's new exodus highway as leading not through the desert back to Jerusalem but directly to the temple, where the Lord Himself will arrive for judgment and purification.
