Context: Revelation 21:22-27 describes the New Jerusalem's unique features. Most striking: "I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple" (v. 22). The city needs no sun or moon—God's glory is its light, the Lamb its lamp (v. 23). Nations walk by this light, kings bring their glory (v. 24). Gates remain perpetually open (v. 25), yet nothing unclean enters—only those in the Lamb's book of life (v. 27). This passage represents the ultimate consummation of temple imagery: the type (physical temple with pillars) gives way to the reality (God's unmediated presence with His people).

OT-to-OT Development:

  • 1 Kings 7:21-22 records the pillars at Solomon's temple entrance—architectural markers for the threshold to God's presence.
  • 1 Kings 6:1 introduces Solomon's temple construction; 2 Kings 25:9 records its destruction.
  • Isaiah 60:19-20 prophesies: "The sun will no more be your light by day... for the LORD will be your everlasting light."
  • Ezekiel 40-48 envisions an eschatological temple with precise architectural specifications—yet Revelation transcends this: no temple at all.

Connections:

  • TO OT: 1 Kings 7:21 (temple pillars), Isaiah 60:19-20 (divine light), Ezekiel 40-48 (eschatological temple vision)
  • FROM REVELATION: Revelation 3:12 (believer as pillar who never leaves), Revelation 22:3-5 (throne, service, seeing God's face)
  • NT PARALLELS: John 2:21 (Christ's body as temple), 1 Corinthians 3:16 (believers as temple)

Christological Connection: The absence of temple fulfills the pillar trajectory: (1) Temple Transcended: Jachin and Boaz marked the entrance to the temple. In the New Jerusalem, there is no temple to enter—God and Lamb ARE the temple. The entrance markers are obsolete. (2) Pillar Function Fulfilled: The pillars proclaimed God's establishment (Jachin) and strength (Boaz). These attributes are now experienced directly. God's faithful purpose and almighty power don't need proclamation via symbols—they are experienced in unmediated presence. (3) Believers as Pillars Still: Revelation 3:12 promises believers will be pillars who never leave. Here they dwell in God's presence eternally—not supporting a building but constituting the worshiping community. (4) Open Gates: Temple access was restricted; the city's gates "will never be shut" (v. 25). Yet entry is exclusive: only Book of Life registrants. Open access for the redeemed, permanent exclusion for the rebellious. (5) Mather's Resolution: The bronze pillars fell to Babylon; living pillars dwell forever. The trajectory from bronze → iron → living stone → eternal pillar reaches its goal: permanent residence in God's presence, which is itself the temple. What the pillars symbolized—God's establishing purpose and almighty power securing His dwelling—becomes the saints' eternal experience.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Backward-Looking), Contrast — The absence of a temple in the New Jerusalem consummates the pillar trajectory: God and the Lamb ARE the temple, rendering entrance markers obsolete as God's establishment and strength are experienced in unmediated presence.
