Galatians 5:1

Greek Key Terms

  • G1657 ἐλευθερία (eleutheria) - "freedom/liberty" - the state Christ grants
  • G1659 ἐλευθερόω (eleutheroō) - "set free" - Christ's liberating action
  • G4739 στήκω (stēkō) - "stand firm" - perseverance in freedom
  • G2218 ζυγός (zygos) - "yoke" - bondage to be avoided

Context: Galatians 5:1 summarizes Paul's argument against returning to law-based religion. Christ has accomplished freedom from the law's condemnation; believers must not re-enslave themselves. This applies the exodus pattern: as the returning exiles were freed and told not to go back to Babylon, Christ frees from sin's bondage—a freedom to be maintained.

OT-to-OT Development

  • Exodus 20:2 - "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery"
  • Isaiah 48:20 - "Leave Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans!"
  • Jeremiah 30:8 - "I will break the yoke off their necks and tear off their bonds"

Connections

  • TO:
    • The exodus pattern of liberation from bondage
  • FROM OT:
    • Isaiah's new exodus prophecies; the return from Babylon under Cyrus
  • FROM NT:
    • Romans 6:18-22 - "You have been set free from sin"
    • John 8:36 - "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed"

Christological Connection: Cyrus's decree freed bodies; Christ's gospel frees souls. Cyrus opened prison doors; Christ opens hearts. The pattern recurs — bondage → deliverer's intervention → freedom → responsibility to live as free people — but the deliverers are not on one line: Christ's freedom is absolute and eternal, freedom from sin's guilt, power, and ultimately presence, secured by One who knows the Father, where Cyrus's was external, political, and issued by a king who did not. Believers are the true returned exiles, called never to return to their former captivity.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Backward-Looking) — of the exodus/liberation pattern, not of Cyrus; Analogy — The exodus pattern of liberation followed by the call to remain free runs from the historical release from Babylon to Christ's gospel (freedom from sin and law), on the principle that delivered people must not return to their former bondage. ANTI-DEFAULT CHECK: The type-bearer here is the pattern, developed at TT 108, not the person of Cyrus. Cyrus is the providential instrument within one historical instance of that pattern; his own relation to Christ is Contrast, and no NT writer names him.
