Exodus 25:40
Hebrew Key Terms
- H7200 רָאָה (ra'ah) - "to see, perceive, behold"; here in the Hophal participle מָרְאֶה, "being shown" — Moses is granted sight of a pattern he did not devise (what that pattern's original is, Hebrews 8:5 will name)
- H8403 תַּבְנִית (tavnit) - "pattern, model, structure"; the architectural blueprint shown in vision
- H2022 הַר (har) - "mountain"; Mount Sinai as place of divine revelation
Context: Exodus 25:40 concludes the instructions for the ark, table, and lampstand by reiterating the command of verse 9. God bookends the first section of tabernacle instructions with the heavenly pattern principle, ensuring Moses understands that every detail matters. The repetition intensifies the command's authority—this is not a suggestion but a divine imperative. The Hophal participle מָרְאֶה ("being shown") indicates ongoing revelation: Moses was continuously granted vision of the pattern throughout the giving of the Law. Exodus itself says that the pattern is God-given and that Moses saw it on the mountain; that its original is a pre-existing heavenly sanctuary is the reading Hebrews warrants (8:5), not a claim Exodus makes in its own words — a distinction worth keeping, since the glory of the NT's advance depends on it being an advance.
OT-to-OT Development
- Exodus 26:30 repeats this command for the tabernacle structure itself, showing the pattern principle governs every component
- Exodus 27:8 applies it to the bronze altar: "It is to be made just as you were shown on the mountain"
- Numbers 8:4 references the pattern for the lampstand: "fashioned according to the pattern the LORD had shown Moses"
- Acts 7:44 (Stephen's sermon) recalls this verse, demonstrating its significance in Israel's historical memory
Connections
- TO:
- Exodus 24:9-18 - Moses, Aaron, elders see God on the mountain; Moses enters cloud for 40 days receiving pattern
- FROM OT:
- 1 Kings 6:38 - "the temple was finished in every detail and according to every specification"
- 2 Chronicles 3:3 - the foundation Solomon laid for the house of God, measured "according to the old standard"
- Ezekiel 43:10-11 - the prophet is to "describe the temple to the people of Israel, so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities," and to make known "its whole design along with all its statutes"
- FROM NT:
- Hebrews 8:5 - citation, near-verbatim: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain" (Hebrews adds πάντα, "everything," absent from the LXX of this verse but supplied by the LXX of Exodus 25:9's κατὰ πάντα, so the citation fuses the two pattern-commands)
- Hebrews 9:23 - copies of heavenly things purified with earthly sacrifices, heavenly things themselves with Christ's sacrifice
Christological Connection: Hebrews applies this verse directly to Christ's high-priestly ministry. The earthly tabernacle, built according to the heavenly pattern, was always inferior to the original. Christ entered "into heaven itself" (Heb 9:24), the reality of which the earthly was merely a shadow. The "pattern" Moses saw was ultimately the eternal Son, through whom and for whom all things were created (Col 1:16). Christ is both the true tabernacle (John 1:14) and the High Priest who ministers in it (Heb 8:1-2).
Connection Method(s): Typology (Institutional, Forward-Looking) — Hebrews 8:5 cites this verse and applies it to Christ's superior ministry, showing the earthly tabernacle was always the derivative copy of the heavenly reality where Christ now serves as High Priest.
The signal this verse carries is vertical (archetype/copy), not by itself temporal. The Forward-Looking sub-mode stands — the type is genuinely prospective by design — but its indicator is disclosed organically, by the OT's own throne-motif trajectory, and retrospectively by Hebrews, most explicitly at Heb 9:8: "the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing."
