Exodus 12:22

Hebrew Key Terms

  • H231 אֵזוֹב (ʾêzôb) - "hyssop, a plant used for medicinal and religious purposes"
  • H92 אֲגֻדָּה (ʾăguddâ) - "bunch, bundle" (cluster of hyssop)
  • H1818 דָּם (dām) - "blood"
  • H5414 נָתַן (nātan) - "to give, put, set" (brush/apply)

Context: On the night of the tenth plague—death of the firstborn—God commanded each Israelite household to slaughter a Passover lamb and apply its blood to the doorframe using a cluster of hyssop. This blood would mark them for deliverance: "When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down" (Exodus 12:23). The command was specific: take hyssop, dip it in the lamb's blood collected in a basin, and brush it on the lintel and doorposts. No one was to leave their house until morning—safety came only within the blood-marked dwelling.

OT-to-OT Development

  • Numbers 19:6, 18 - Hyssop reappears in the red heifer ritual, thrown into the burning heifer (19:6) and used to sprinkle purification water on the unclean (19:18). This connects hyssop with purification from death-defilement, expanding its typological significance beyond Passover.
  • Psalm 51:7 - David's prayer "Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean" demonstrates that later OT authors understood hyssop's ceremonial use pointed to spiritual cleansing. David looked beyond the physical ritual to the reality it prefigured.
  • Leviticus 14:4-6 - Hyssop appears in the leprosy cleansing ritual with cedar wood, scarlet yarn, blood, and living water, establishing a consistent pattern: hyssop mediates cleansing through blood application.

Connections

  • TO: Genesis 3:21 - God clothed Adam and Eve with animal skins, requiring the first sacrifice and foreshadowing blood-covering for sin
  • FROM OT: Leviticus 14:4-6 (leprosy cleansing with hyssop), Numbers 19:6, 18 (red heifer purification with hyssop), Psalm 51:7 (spiritual cleansing through hyssop-typology)
  • FROM NT: John 19:29 (hyssop at Christ's crucifixion), Hebrews 9:19 (Moses' covenant-sprinkling with hyssop), 1 Corinthians 5:7 ("Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed")

Christological Connection: Hyssop applied the Passover lamb's blood that saved from death's angel; at Calvary the true Lamb's blood was shed to save from sin's judgment. John alone preserves hyssop at the cross (John 19:29; the Synoptics write "reed")—a canonical signal, suggestive not probative: there the hyssop lifts sour wine and applies no blood. The Passover-lamb fulfilment is secured at John 19:36 and the hyssop thread at Hebrews 9:19. Christ's death fulfilled what Exodus 12 typified: protection through substitutionary blood, applied personally, delivering from divine wrath. The humble hyssop plant, used repeatedly for cleansing throughout Israel's history, points to the humble means by which God accomplished salvation—through faith in the crucified Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking) — Hyssop applying the Passover lamb's blood to doorframes for deliverance from death's angel prefigures the application of Christ's blood through faith for deliverance from divine judgment. John alone preserves hyssop at the cross (John 19:29; the Synoptics write "reed")—a canonical signal, suggestive not probative; the Passover-lamb fulfilment is secured at John 19:36 and the hyssop thread at Hebrews 9:19.
