Foundation Text
Genesis 2:10-14
Hebrew Key Terms
- H4325 מַיִם mayim - water
- H5104 נָהָר nahar - river
- H1588 גַּן gan - garden
- H5731 עֵדֶן eden - Eden (delight, pleasure)
Context: Genesis 2:10-14 describes the geography of Eden. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, then divided into four headwaters: Pishon, Gihon, Tigris (Hiddekel), and Euphrates. This establishes the pattern of water flowing from God's presence (the garden where God walks, Gen 3:8) to sustain life and fertility.
OT-to-OT Development
- Psalm 36:8-9 spiritualizes this imagery: "river of delights" and "fountain of life" with God
- Ezekiel 47:1-12 reverses the direction: river flows FROM the temple (God's dwelling) into the world, echoing Eden but now from eschatological temple
- Joel 3:18 prophesies "a spring will flow from the house of the LORD"
Connections
- TO:
- Creation account (Gen 1); tree of life (Gen 2:9)
- FROM OT:
- Ezekiel 47:1-12 - temple river
- Psalm 46:4 - river of God's city
- Zechariah 14:8 - living waters from Jerusalem
- FROM NT:
- John 7:37-39 - living water = Spirit
- Revelation 22:1-2 - river of life from God's throne
Christological Connection: The river flowing from Eden establishes the pattern the Holy Spirit fills when He flows from Christ (John 7:37-39) and ultimately from the throne of God and the Lamb (Rev 22:1). Eden's river sustained physical life; Christ gives the Spirit who imparts eternal life. The pattern: life flows from God's presence → life flows from Christ → life flows from believers indwelt by the Spirit.
Connection Method(s)
- Longitudinal Theme (primary) — Eden's river flowing from God's presence to water the garden is the origin point of the canon-wide water-of-life motif: wherever God dwells, life flows outward. Per Beale's temple-theology, Eden is the original sanctuary, and its river is the seed-form of every later "water from God's presence" text — the wilderness rock, the temple river, the eschatological fountain, and finally the throne-river of the new creation (Rev 22:1).
- ANTI-DEFAULT CHECK: not a formal Christological type. The text supplies no prospective indicator, and no NT writer types Eden's river to Christ; the correspondence to the Spirit flowing from Christ is real but runs along the motif, not through a type-antitype warrant. Classify as the theme's origin, not as Typology.
