Hebrew Key Terms:
- H4325 מַיִם mayim - water

Context: Ezekiel 47:1-12 is the climax of Ezekiel's temple vision (chapters 40-48). Water flows from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, progressively deepening (ankle → knee → waist → swimming depth). Trees line both banks, bearing fruit monthly, with leaves for healing. The river transforms the Dead Sea from salt to fresh water, bringing life wherever it flows.
OT-to-OT Development:
- Genesis 2:10 - River from Eden: Ezekiel reverses the pattern (water flows FROM temple rather than TO garden), but the theology is identical (life from God's presence)
- Psalm 46:4 - "River whose streams make glad the city of God" - Ezekiel provides the vision this psalm anticipated
- Joel 3:18 - "A fountain will flow from the house of the LORD and water the valley of acacias" - echoes Ezekiel's temple-source river
- Zechariah 14:8 - "Living waters will flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea, half to the western sea" - develops Ezekiel's vision eschatologically

Christological Connection: Jesus fulfills Ezekiel 47 in multiple layers:
- Christ as Temple: John 2:19-21 identifies Jesus' body as the true temple. Water flows from the temple threshold = water flows from Christ's pierced side (John 19:34).
- Christ as Source: John 7:37-38 applies the river imagery to believers: "Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water" (ESV). John explains: "this He said about the Spirit" (7:39).
- Progressive Deepening: Ezekiel's ankle → knee → waist → river symbolizes the Spirit's increasing work from Pentecost through church history.
- Life-Giving Power: The Dead Sea made fresh = spiritual death to life transformation (Eph 2:1-5).
- Monthly Fruit, Healing Leaves: Revelation 22:2 directly quotes Ezekiel 47:12, placing the fulfillment in the New Jerusalem with the river flowing "from the throne of God and of the Lamb."
The escalation: Ezekiel's eschatological temple → Christ the true temple → Church as living temples (1 Cor 3:16; Eph 2:21-22) → New Jerusalem (Rev 21-22).
Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking), Longitudinal Theme — Ezekiel's vision of life-giving water flowing from the temple, progressively deepening and healing the Dead Sea, typologically prefigures the Spirit flowing from Christ the true temple (John 2:19; 7:37-39), consummated in Revelation 22:1-2.
