Leviticus 15:13
Hebrew Key Terms
- H4325 מַיִם (mayim) - "water"
- H2416 חַיִּים (chayyim) - "living, running" (literally "alive")
- H2891 טָהֵר (taher) - "to be clean, to purify"
Context: Leviticus 15 addresses ceremonial uncleanness from bodily discharges. Verse 13 prescribes the purification ritual: "When the man has been cleansed from his discharge, he must count off seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe himself in fresh water, and he shall be clean." The Hebrew behind "fresh water" is מַיִם חַיִּים, literally "living water"; the phrase "living water" refers to fresh, flowing water from a spring or stream, not stagnant water. This external washing addressed ceremonial defilement but could not cleanse the conscience or transform the heart.
OT-to-OT Development
- 2 Kings 5:10-14 applies this principle to Naaman's leprosy—he must wash in the Jordan River to be cleansed, though he initially resists the humble means
- Ezekiel 36:25 transforms the concept: God promises "I will also sprinkle clean water on you" (divine action) leading to internal cleansing ("a new heart," "a new spirit," 36:26)
- Zechariah 13:1 prophesies "a fountain will be opened... to cleanse them from sin and impurity"—escalating from ritual washing to eschatological cleansing
Connections
- TO:
- Genesis 1:2 - Spirit hovering over waters—life-giving association
- Exodus 30:17-21 - bronze laver for priestly washing
- FROM OT:
- 2 Kings 5:10-14 - Naaman's washing
- Ezekiel 36:25-27 - divine cleansing promise
- Zechariah 13:1 - cleansing fountain
- FROM NT:
- John 5:3-7 - Pool of Bethesda shows ritual washing's ineffectiveness
- John 7:37-39 - Christ offers living water = Holy Spirit
- Titus 3:5 - washing of regeneration
- Hebrews 10:22 - bodies washed with pure water
Christological Connection: The "living water" required for purification opens a motif that reaches its goal in Christ, who offers "streams of living water" (John 7:38)—the Holy Spirit given to believers. What the law commanded externally (washing in living water), Christ accomplishes internally (cleansing the conscience through His blood and giving the life-giving Spirit). The Pool of Bethesda demonstrates the tragic inadequacy of ritual washing; Christ's word demonstrates the power of divine grace that needs no pool, no human effort, only faith in His sovereign power.
Connection Method(s): Contrast, Longitudinal Theme (Living Water / Divine Cleansing) — Leviticus 15:13 is the trajectory's ritual baseline: the contrast between the law's external washing in running water (מַיִם חַיִּים, living water) and Christ's internal cleansing through the Spirit demonstrates the inadequacy of ritual apart from divine power, and the phrase opens the living-water motif that reaches Christ, who offers "Streams of living water" (John 7:38). Typology is not claimed here: the Levitical washing → Spirit type is the spine of TT 098 and TT 170, and is cited here, not carried by this table.
