Hebrew Key Terms:
Context: Hosea 2 describes YHWH wooing Israel back after her adultery. Despite her unfaithfulness, God declares: "I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD" (vv. 19-20). Isaiah 54:5-8 similarly speaks: "Your Maker is your husband—the LORD Almighty is His name... The LORD has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit... but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you." Both prophets develop the marriage metaphor for God and His people.
OT-to-OT Development:
Connections:
Christological Connection: These prophetic texts prepare for Christ the Bridegroom. (1) Betrothed Forever: "I will betroth you to Me forever" (Hos 2:19). Christ's union with His church is eternal—no divorce, no separation. (2) Five Covenant Gifts: Hosea's brideprice: righteousness, justice, steadfast love, compassion, faithfulness. Christ brings all these to His bride through His work. (3) Your Maker Is Your Husband: Isaiah identifies YHWH as husband (54:5). Christ, as YHWH incarnate, fulfills this role. He is both Creator and Bridegroom. (4) Deserted Then Restored: "Called you like a wife deserted... but with everlasting love I will have compassion" (Isa 54:6-8). Christ restores the alienated, the abandoned, the unfaithful. (5) Through the Servant's Work: Isaiah 54 follows Isaiah 53. The marriage feast is possible because the Servant bore our iniquities. Christ's death purchases His bride.
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment; Longitudinal Theme — Hosea's and Isaiah's explicit prophecies of YHWH as husband betrothing Israel forever are fulfilled in Christ the Bridegroom, advancing the marriage/bride theme through prophetic development.
