Earlier text
God also told Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation. Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has appeared to me and said: I have surely attended to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.
Earlier text
Exodus 3:6BSB
Then He said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
From the bush God declares, "'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob'" (Acts 7:32; Exodus 3:15-16). The self-identification binds the Exodus God to the patriarchal covenant: the deliverance about to unfold is not a new venture but the keeping of an ancient oath. Jesus draws the deepest implication of this very title — that the God who still names himself the God of the long-dead patriarchs is "not the God of the dead, but of the living," so that the fathers live to him (Luke 20:37-38). Moses trembled and dared not look; but the covenant faithfulness declared at the bush is the faithfulness that raises the dead and secures every promise in the risen Christ.
