Earlier text

Isaiah 8:14BSB

And He will be a sanctuary—but to both houses of Israel a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, to the dwellers of Jerusalem a trap and a snare.

Significance

Paul combines two Isaiah texts about a stone in Zion - one positive (cornerstone of faith), one negative (stumbling stone). Christ is both: cornerstone for believers, stumbling stone for unbelievers. Brilliant conflation showing dual response to Christ.

Hermeneutical Notes

NT Use Pattern: Alternate Textual — Paul uses the LXX "whoever believes will not be put to shame" rather than the MT "whoever believes will not be in haste." The faith-and-shame logic of Romans 9-10 rides on the LXX reading.
