Significance

"It is clear that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts" (2 Cor 3:3). The lexical warrant is exact and verified at the vault's own shelves, at both poles of Paul's antithesis: his "tablets of stone" carries λιθίναις (G3035) and his "tablets of human hearts" carries σαρκίναις (G4560, "of flesh") — and LXX Ezekiel 36:26 uses the same two adjectives of the same organ, removing the stone heart (καρδίαν λιθίνην, G2588 + G3035) to give a heart of flesh (καρδίαν σαρκίνην, G2588 + G4560). This pair is deliberately filed as a distinct IP beside its sibling 2 Cor 3:3 → Ezek 11:19, not folded into it, because the two oracles are not interchangeable donors: LXX 11:19 promises "another heart" (ἑτέραν) and leaves the divine Spirit's role unstated, while 36:26 promises the "new heart" (καινήν) and is completed by 36:27 — "And I will put My Spirit within you" — naming the agent. It is exactly that agent Paul names as the writer: the letter is inscribed "with the Spirit of the living God." Ezekiel 36:26-27 is therefore the form of the oracle that supplies both the flesh-heart writing surface and the Spirit who writes; 11:19 supplies only the former. The Reference Type is Allusion: the shared antithetical lexemes are unmistakable, but Paul quotes no clause and uses no citation formula, blending Ezekiel with Exodus 31:18 (stone tablets) and Jeremiah 31:33 (law written on hearts) into a single new-covenant claim. The Connection Method is Promise-Fulfillment, not typology (per the anchor's method ruling — 36:25-27 is a promise oracle): the Corinthians themselves are the promise kept, living evidence that the stone-to-flesh surgery has been performed; Longitudinal Theme rides secondary on the heart-renewal thread (Deut 30:6 → Jer 31:33 → Ezek 11:19 → Ezek 36:26 → 2 Cor 3:3). And the fleshly heart has a purpose in this very chapter: fifteen verses later Paul names what the new heart is for — "we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory" (2 Cor 3:18). The telos: a heart of stone cannot behold and be changed; a heart of flesh can — the new heart is not the treasure but the organ that can finally taste the Treasure, and the proof it is beating is that Christ's glory has begun to look desirable.
