Earlier text
The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
Paul says the church is "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone" (akrogōniaios), then names the structure that rises on Him: "a holy temple in the Lord... a dwelling place for God in His Spirit" (Eph 2:21-22). The primary stone-allusion here is Isaiah 28:16's foundation sense — the "tested... precious cornerstone, a sure foundation" Yahweh lays in Zion (documented at Eph 2:20 → Isa 28:16). The Psalm 118:22 strand is genuinely present but secondary and diffuse: Paul does not echo the psalm's distinctive rejection-vindication career (no "rejected by builders"), and his Greek runs to akrogōniaios / foundation rather than the psalm's kephalē gōnias ("head of the corner"). What Ps 118:22 contributes is its place in the bundled OT stone-cluster (Ps 118:22 + Isa 28:16 + Isa 8:14) that the NT routinely fuses, and the ecclesiological reach the apostles drew from it — Christ the chosen Stone as the cornerstone of the new temple-people, the very move Peter makes at 1 Pet 2:4-7 and Paul makes here. This is therefore an Echo, not a citation, and the method is Longitudinal Theme (Temple and Presence) + Promise-Fulfillment, not typology (Eph 2:20 advances no rejected-then-vindicated correspondence — it announces the foundation-stone Yahweh promised now historically laid and built upon — so by the anti-default rule the typological reading of Ps 118:22 stays at Matt 21:42 / Acts 4:11, while Eph 2:20 inherits only the stone-cluster's temple-fulfillment). The telos lands not in architecture but in belonging: to be joined to this cornerstone is to be built into God's own dwelling on a foundation that cannot be rejected away — the marvelous deed of the LORD (Ps 118:23) become the security and glory of those who are His house, which makes Christ the cornerstone desirable, not merely structural.
