Significance: Christ embodies what Adam should have been - divine image bearer and ruler. Yet the εἰκών of Colossians 1:15 is more than the ideal image-bearer: Christ is the Image ontologically — the Creator through whom and for whom all things were made (Col 1:16), in whom God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell (1:19; cf. Heb 1:3) — before He ever takes up Adam's vocational image. "Perfect Image" therefore names the Creator who fulfills the creature's vocation, not the best of the image-bearers.
