Significance

This single verse re-speaks the commission verbs with deliberate density: "fruitful" (pārâ), "multiplied" (rābâ), and "the land was filled (mālēʾ) with them" — three of Gen 1:28's five commission verbs — alongside Exodus's own intensifiers šāraṣ ("swarmed," the creation-week verb of Gen 1:20) and ʿāṣam ("grew mighty"). Three commission verbs in one verse is no accident — the narrator signals that Israel is the corporate Adam, fulfilling the commission even under bondage in Egypt. The {pārâ · rābâ · mālēʾ · ʾereṣ} collocation stands in only four verses of the whole canon (Genesis 1:22 over the creatures → 1:28 over humanity → 9:1 to Noah → Exodus 1:7 of Israel), a recurring blessing-refrain whose warrant rests on corporate solidarity and the theme's own forward motion. Where Gen 1:28 commanded humanity to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, Exodus 1:7 reports Israel doing exactly this, inside the death-world of Egypt, against opposition. The connection is corporate-solidarity: Israel embodies the Adam-figure carrying the commission forward — a member of the one Adam's line, not a designed type in its own right. The trajectory lands in the Last Adam and the new corporate Adam, the church, whose growth Luke describes with the very same LXX commission-verbs (Acts 6:7; 12:24; 19:20 — both of which the Readable Bible already links back to this verse).
