Significance

In 1 Kings 8:15-21, Solomon declares that God has fulfilled (מִלֵּא, mille') His promise to David by enabling Solomon to build the temple. He explicitly references the Davidic covenant: "Since the day I brought My people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house... But I have chosen David to be over My people Israel." The allusion to 2 Samuel 7:13, where God promises David's offspring "will build a house for My Name" (הוּא יִבְנֶה־בַּיִת לִשְׁמִי, hu' yivneh bayit lishmi), is made explicit — Solomon's dedication speech is framed as the fulfillment of the Nathan oracle. What God promised through Nathan, Solomon now declares accomplished. Solomon's speech also adds a detail absent from the original Nathan oracle: God's choice of Jerusalem itself (1 Kings 8:16), linking the election of David to the election of Zion as a further outworking of the covenant that 2 Samuel 7:13 does not yet specify.
