Trajectory Table

New Jerusalem (Ultimate Temple-City)

10 stages

Trajectory Walkthrough · the whole trajectory, stage by stage 25:55

The vision of New Jerusalem represents the consummation of God's temple-building project: a city that is itself a temple, where the distinction between sacred and secular space dissolves because God's presence fills all. Throughout Scripture, the theme of God-dwelling-with-his-people develops organically through each epoch: Eden (garden-sanctuary), tabernacle (Eden-in-miniature traveling with Israel), Jerusalem temple (Zion as cosmic mountain), prophetic visions of restored temple-city (Ezekiel 40-48; Isaiah 60, 65; Zechariah 2, 14), Christ as living temple (John 2:19-21), church as spiritual temple (Ephesians 2:19-22), and finally New Jerusalem descending from heaven—a perfect cube like the Holy of Holies, yet filling all creation. This trajectory shows that God's purpose was never a localized sanctuary but a cosmic dwelling where heaven and earth unite, the dwelling place of God encompasses all reality, and redeemed humanity dwells with God in unbroken fellowship forever. The pilgrim people who journey to this city are the object of TT 087 (pilgrim-people identity).

How this connects — Method

Longitudinal Theme (primary) — Temple-and-Presence is a paradigmatic canon-wide motif (the presence of God is one of the longitudinal themes Greidanus himself names): a single thread developing organically from Eden's garden-sanctuary through tabernacle, Jerusalem temple, prophetic Zion visions, Christ as temple, Church as temple, and cosmic temple-city in the new creation — carried along the theme's own redemptive-historical time-axis, each stage advancing the story on the divine-presence line. The trajectory is a developing theme rather than a single type-antitype pair: apart from the two narrow correspondences named below, a stage does not "prefigure" the next so much as extend and clarify the same thread. Also Promise-Fulfillment (secondary) — Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Zechariah make specific prophetic announcements about a glorified Zion where God will dwell with His people; the Ezekiel 40-48 vision ("THE LORD IS THERE"), Isaiah 65:17-18 ("For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth… I will create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight"), and Zechariah 2:10-11 and 14:8-9 are verbal commitments that find their realization in Revelation 21:1-22:5. Also Typology (tertiary, narrow — not to be promoted) — two correspondences are claimed, and they do not rest on the same kind of warrant. (1) NT-named: Eden's garden-sanctuary (river, tree of life, precious stones, cosmic mountain) genuinely prefigures the restored paradise of Revelation 22:1-5, and the New Testament itself names that correspondence (Rev 2:7 to Gen 2:9; Rev 22:2 to Gen 3:24). (2) Design-warranted, discovered: the Jerusalem temple's Most Holy Place — which 1 Kings 6:16 names and 6:20 measures as a twenty-cubit cube — corresponds to the cube-shaped city of Revelation 21:16. Its Characteristic 5 (Retrospective Interpretation) does not rest on 21:16, which supplies dimensions without stating fulfillment, but on the Revelation 21:22 statement — "But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple" — the institution fulfilled by being absorbed into the reality it signified; the cube = Most Holy Place identification is inferred from, not stated in, Revelation 21:16. On those two distinct warrants both correspondences satisfy the vault's Five Essential Characteristics of a valid type. Eden's relation to the city qua city is filed not as a type but as the theme's seed-node — the first appearance of the pattern the thread will carry.

IOT Type — Garden-City of EdenType
Eden functions as proto-temple and proto-city—a claim grounded not in etymology (בְּעֵדֶן means "delight/luxury") but in Eden's sanctuary features (per Beale): God walking there (Genesis 3:8), guardian cherubim at its eastward entrance (Genesis 3:24) anticipating tabernacle architecture; contains precious stones and gold (Genesis 2:11-12) like temple furnishings; river flows from Eden dividing into four headwaters (2:10-14), supplying water to surrounding lands—city as source of blessing. Ezekiel 28:13-14 describes Eden as "the holy mountain of God" with guardian cherub—temple imagery. Eden = original garden-sanctuary-city from which divine presence and blessing flow. Though small in scale, establishes pattern: dwelling place of God = source of life for creation. This is seed-form of New Jerusalem: beauty, abundance, divine presence, rivers, precious materials, cosmic mountain. Seed-node: Eden as proto-temple is where the temple-city pattern first appears. This stage draws on and cites the garden-sanctuary reading rather than re-establishing the institution, which is owned by TT 048 — Eden as Temple (Original Sanctuary). Eden's relation to the city qua city is the seed of the theme, not a type-antitype pair; the narrow Eden type this table does claim runs to the restored paradise of Revelation 22:1-5.
Texts
Genesis 2:8-14

8And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed. 9Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters: 11The name of the first river is Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there. 13The name of the second river is Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush. 14The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

Ezekiel 28:13-14

13You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold, prepared on the day of your creation. 14You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for I had ordained you. You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

Ezekiel 31:8-9

8The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it; the cypresses could not compare with its branches, nor the plane trees match its boughs. No tree in the garden of God could compare with its beauty. | TOSK | TT 9I made it beautiful with its many branches, the envy of all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God.’

IIOT Development — Tabernacle: Eden in MiniatureDevelopment
God commands a dwelling: "And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell (שָׁכַן) among them" (Exodus 25:8), built precisely "according to the pattern I show you" on the mountain (25:9). Eden's sanctuary features are rebuilt in miniature: gold, guardian cherubim woven into the veil and mounted over the ark, eastward-facing entrance, lampstand as stylized tree of life. When the work is finished, "the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle" (40:34-35)—exactly as glory will later fill Solomon's house (1 Kings 8:10-11). The presence becomes portable, traveling with Israel (40:36-38): the garden-sanctuary is no longer fixed to one ground, anticipating a dwelling that moves toward all the earth. CRITICAL: 1 Kings 8:10 to Exodus 40:34 Glory-cloud transfer—the key intra-OT link in the presence trajectory; its shared wording (cloud · glory · filled · could not) lands at 1 Kings 8:11 ∥ Exodus 40:35.
Texts
Exodus 25:8-9

8And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them. 9You must make the tabernacle and design all its furnishings according to the pattern I show you.

Exodus 40:34-38

34Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35Moses was unable to enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 36Whenever the cloud was lifted from above the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out through all the stages of their journey. 37If the cloud was not lifted, they would not set out until the day it was taken up. 38For the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel through all their journeys.

IIIOT Development — Jerusalem and TempleDevelopment
David conquers Jebusite city, establishes Jerusalem as capital (2 Samuel 5:6-9); Solomon builds temple at city's center (1 Kings 8). Psalms celebrate Jerusalem as "the city of our God, His holy mountain... Beautiful in loftiness, the joy of all the earth... the city of the great King" (Psalm 48:1-2). Psalm 46:4-5 places Eden's river in the city—"There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells"—among the clearest pre-prophetic texts associating the river-of-life motif (Genesis 2:10) with Zion, alongside Psalm 36:8-9 ("You give them drink from Your river of delights... with You is the fountain of life") and Psalm 65:1, 4, 9 ("Praise awaits You, O God, in Zion... the holiness of Your temple... The streams of God are full of water"). It is a shared river-image (the common word nāhār), not a distinctive verbal citation — the thematic hinge to Ezekiel 47 and Revelation 22. Psalm 87 registers the nations as born in Zion (87:4-6)—the city of God as mother of the peoples, a thematic OT root of Revelation 21:24-26's nations walking in the city's light, beside Isaiah 60:3, 11, which Revelation 21:24-26 takes up verbally. Psalm 132:13-14: "For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His home: 'This is My resting place forever and ever; here I will dwell, for I have desired this home.'" Pattern established: God's presence dwells in temple, temple sanctifies city, city becomes "holy city." Yet limited geographically, vulnerable to attack and destruction, contaminated by sin. Escalation needed: Jerusalem repeatedly conquered (Babylonians 586 BC, Romans AD 70); earthly city points to heavenly reality. Hebrews 12:22: "Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem."
Texts
2 Samuel 5:6-9

6Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: "You will never get in here. Even the blind and lame can repel you." For they thought, "David cannot get in here." 7Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David). 8On that day he said, "Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the water shaft to reach the lame and blind who are despised by David." That is why it is said, "The blind and the lame will never enter the palace." 9So David took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built it up all the way around, from the supporting terraces inward.

1 Kings 8:1-11

1At that time Solomon assembled before him in Jerusalem the elders of Israel—all the tribal heads and family leaders of the Israelites—to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Zion, the City of David. 2And all the men of Israel came together to King Solomon at the feast in the seventh month, the month of Ethanim. 3When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark, 4and they brought up the ark of the LORD and the Tent of Meeting with all its sacred furnishings. So the priests and Levites carried them up. 5There, before the ark, King Solomon and the whole congregation of Israel who had assembled with him sacrificed so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered. 6Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, beneath the wings of the cherubim. 7For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark and its poles. 8The poles extended far enough that their ends were visible from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are there to this day. 9There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites after they had come out of the land of Egypt. 10And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD 11so that the priests could not stand there to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.

Psalm 46:4-5

4There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5God is within her; she will not be moved. God will help her when morning dawns.

Psalms 48:1-3

1A song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, His holy mountain. 2Beautiful in loftiness, the joy of all the earth, like the peaks of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the great King. 3God is in her citadels; He has shown Himself to be a fortress.

Psalm 87:1-7

1A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A song. He has founded His city on the holy mountains. 2The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. 3Glorious things are ascribed to you, O city of God. Selah 4“I will mention Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me—along with Philistia, Tyre, and Cush—when I say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’” 5And it will be said of Zion: “This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High Himself will establish her.” 6The LORD will record in the register of the peoples: “This one was born in Zion.” Selah 7Singers and pipers will proclaim, “All my springs of joy are in You.”

Psalms 132:13-14

13For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His home: 14“This is My resting place forever and ever; here I will dwell, for I have desired this home.

IVProphetic Anticipation — Ezekiel's Temple-City VisionProphetic Anticipation
Ezekiel's vision (chapters 40-48) shows eschatological temple-city with features anticipating New Jerusalem: temple with precise measurements (40:5-42:20); river flowing from temple threshold, growing deeper as it flows east (47:1-12), making Dead Sea live, trees on both banks bearing fruit monthly with leaves for healing (47:12)—Eden imagery intensified; city has twelve gates named after twelve tribes (48:30-35); city's name: "THE LORD IS THERE" (יְהוָה שָׁמָּה, Ezekiel 48:35)—God's presence defining reality of city. Vision is idealized, not literal blueprint (temple too large for actual geography), pointing to greater reality. Anticipates day when temple and city merge, God's presence fills all, and creation is healed.
Texts
Ezekiel 40:1-48:35

35Then he brought me to the north gate and measured it. It had the same measurements as the others,

Ezekiel 47:1-12

1Then the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. 2Next he brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and there I saw the water trickling out from the south side. 3As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and led me through ankle-deep water. 4Then he measured off a thousand cubits and led me through knee-deep water. Again he measured a thousand cubits and led me through waist-deep water. 5Once again he measured off a thousand cubits, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough for swimming—a river that could not be crossed on foot. 6“Son of man, do you see this?” he asked. Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7When I arrived, I saw a great number of trees along both banks of the river. 8And he said to me, “This water flows out to the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah. When it empties into the Sea, the water there becomes fresh. | C | TOSK | ATN 9Wherever the river flows, there will be swarms of living creatures and a great number of fish, because it flows there and makes the waters fresh; so wherever the river flows, everything will flourish. | C | TOSK | ATN 10Fishermen will stand by the shore; from En-gedi to En-eglaim they will spread their nets to catch fish of many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. 11But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. 12Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for healing.” Ezekiel 47:12

Ezekiel 48:30-35

30“These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, 31the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. On the north side there will be three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi. 32On the east side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, there will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan. 33On the south side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, there will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun. 34And on the west side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, there will be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali. 35The perimeter of the city will be 18,000 cubits, and from that day on the name of the city will be: THE LORD IS THERE.”

VProphetic Anticipation — Isaiah's Glorious ZionProphetic Anticipation
Isaiah prophesies glorified Jerusalem with universal scope: "In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it" (Isaiah 2:2)—cosmic temple-mountain drawing all peoples. Isaiah 54:11-12: the afflicted, storm-tossed city refounded—"I will set your stones in antimony and lay your foundations with sapphires... I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones"—precious-stone foundations that Revelation 21:19-20 takes up directly (a recognized OT source of New Jerusalem's jeweled foundations, alongside the high priest's breastpiece of Exodus 28:17-20, whose twelve tribal stones stand behind Revelation 21:12-14's twelve-tribe gates and twelve-apostle foundations). Isaiah 60: "Arise, shine, for your light has come" (60:1); "Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn" (60:3); gates never shut (60:11); "No longer will the sun be your light by day, nor the brightness of the moon shine on your night; for the LORD will be your everlasting light" (60:19)—supernatural illumination. Isaiah 65:17-25: "For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth" (65:17); "for I will create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight" (65:18); no more weeping, infant mortality, violence—curse removed. (The new-heavens-and-earth side of this shared Isaiah 65:17-18 anchor is owned by TT 107 — New Creation; TT 109 takes it up only for the temple-city it creates.) Isaiah 66:22: "For just as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, will endure before Me," declares the LORD. Escalation: From earthly Jerusalem → to cosmic Zion encompassing new creation.
Texts
Isaiah 2:2-4

2In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. 3And many peoples will come and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths." For the law will go forth from Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4Then He will judge between the nations and arbitrate for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor train anymore for war.

Isaiah 54:11-12

11“O afflicted city, lashed by storms, without solace, surely I will set your stones in antimony and lay your foundations with sapphires. 12I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones.

Isaiah 60:1-22

1Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. 2For behold, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples; but the LORD will rise upon you, and His glory will appear over you. 3Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. 4Lift up your eyes and look around: They all gather and come to you; your sons will come from afar, and your daughters will be carried on the arm. 5Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will tremble and swell with joy, because the riches of the sea will be brought to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you. 6Caravans of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah, and all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and frankincense and proclaiming the praises of the LORD. 7All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth will serve you and go up on My altar with acceptance; I will adorn My glorious house. 8Who are these who fly like clouds, like doves to their shelters? 9Surely the islands will wait for Me, with the ships of Tarshish in the lead, to bring your children from afar, with their silver and gold, to the honor of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for He has glorified you. 10Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in anger, yet in favor I will show you mercy. 11Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut, day or night, so that the wealth of the nations may be brought into you, with their kings being led in procession. 12For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; it will be utterly destroyed. 13The glory of Lebanon will come to you—its cypress, elm, and boxwood together—to adorn the place of My sanctuary, and I will glorify the place of My feet. 14The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you; all who reviled you will fall facedown at your feet and call you the City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel. 15Whereas you have been forsaken and despised, with no one passing through, I will make you an everlasting pride, a joy from age to age. 16You will drink the milk of nations and nurse at the breasts of royalty; you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. 17Instead of bronze I will bring you gold; I will bring silver in place of iron, bronze instead of wood, and iron instead of stones. I will appoint peace as your governor and righteousness as your ruler. 18No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders. But you will name your walls Salvation and your gates Praise. 19No longer will the sun be your light by day, nor the brightness of the moon shine on your night; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your splendor. 20Your sun will no longer set, and your moon will not wane; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and the days of your sorrow will cease. 21Then all your people will be righteous; they will possess the land forever; they are the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, so that I may be glorified. 22The least of you will become a thousand, and the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; in its time I will accomplish it quickly.

Isaiah 65:17-25

17For behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. 18But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for I will create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight. 19I will rejoice in Jerusalem and take delight in My people. The sounds of weeping and crying will no longer be heard in her. 20No longer will a nursing infant live but a few days, or an old man fail to live out his years. For the youth will die at a hundred years, and he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed. 21They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22No longer will they build houses for others to inhabit, nor plant for others to eat. For as is the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, and My chosen ones will fully enjoy the work of their hands. 23They will not labor in vain or bear children doomed to disaster; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD—they and their descendants with them. 24Even before they call, I will answer, and while they are still speaking, I will hear. 25The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but the food of the serpent will be dust. They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain," says the LORD.

Isaiah 66:22-23

22"For just as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, will endure before Me," declares the LORD, "so your descendants and your name will endure. 23From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.

VIProphetic Anticipation — Zechariah's Living WatersProphetic Anticipation
Zechariah prophesies: "Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion, for I am coming to dwell among you," declares the LORD; "On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people" (Zechariah 2:10-11)—God personally dwelling in city. Zechariah 8:3: "I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the LORD of Hosts will be called the Holy Mountain." Zechariah 14:8: "And on that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it toward the Eastern Sea and the other half toward the Western Sea"—dividing whole world; "On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth" (14:9). Zechariah 14:20-21: Even common items will be inscribed "HOLY TO THE LORD"—"on the bells of the horses"—and "every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts": all reality sanctified. Temple-city expands to encompass earth.
Texts
Zechariah 2:10-11

10“Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion, for I am coming to dwell among you,” declares the LORD. 11"On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you.

Zechariah 8:3

3This is what the LORD says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the LORD of Hosts will be called the Holy Mountain.”

Zechariah 14:8-9

8And on that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it toward the Eastern Sea and the other half toward the Western Sea, in summer and winter alike. 9On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—the LORD alone, and His name alone.

Zechariah 14:16-21

16Then all the survivors from the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. 17And should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, then the rain will not fall on them. 18And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter in, then the rain will not fall on them; this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. 19This will be the punishment of Egypt and of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. 20On that day, HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the house of the LORD will be like the sprinkling bowls before the altar. 21Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of Hosts.

VIINT Inauguration — Christ Embodies the Temple (Already)Inauguration
Jesus declares: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again" (John 2:19), speaking of "the temple of His body" (2:21)—Christ is temple. To Samaritan woman: "a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem... the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth" (John 4:21, 23)—geographical temple obsolete; Christ mediates worship. Hebrews 12:22-24: "Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem... to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant"—believers already access the heavenly temple-city through Christ (perfect tense προσεληλύθατε, "you have come"). This is the temple-and-presence theme reaching its decisive inaugurated fulfillment: the Most Holy Place is no longer a room in Jerusalem but the risen Christ himself, who tabernacles (ἐσκήνωσεν, John 1:14) among us. CRITICAL: John 2:17 to Psalms 69:9 Zeal for the Jerusalem house—"My Father's house" (John 2:16)—will "consume" Him (John 2:17, taking up Psalm 69:9), and that consuming zeal leads to the death whose raising makes His body the true temple (2:19-21).
Texts
John 2:19-21

19Jesus answered, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again." 20"This temple took forty-six years to build," the Jews replied, "and You are going to raise it up in three days?" 21But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body.

John 4:21-24

21"Believe Me, woman," Jesus replied, "a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. 24God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth."

Hebrews 12:22-24

22Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to myriads of angels 23in joyful assembly, to the congregation of the firstborn, enrolled in heaven. You have come to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

VIIINT Expansion — Church as Spiritual Temple (Already/Not Yet)Expansion
Paul describes the church: "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord" (Ephesians 2:20-21)—living temple under construction now. 1 Peter 2:5: believers, "like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house." Galatians 4:26: "But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother." The already/not-yet tension sharpens here: Hebrews 13:14 — "For here we do not have a permanent city, but we are looking for the city that is to come"; Jesus promises "In My Father's house are many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2-3). Revelation 3:12 seals the hope: to the overcomer Christ promises, "Upon him I will write the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from My God)"—the city's name is pledged to believers before the city descends, the not-yet seal on a present identity. The church is already the temple locally (the Spirit indwelling believers), not yet the consummated cosmic temple-city (see TT 158 — Temple Ecclesiology, which owns the Eph 2:19-22 / 1 Pet 2:5 church-as-temple development). Escalation: from stone temple in one city → to global spiritual temple of living believers awaiting physical descent of New Jerusalem.
Texts
Ephesians 2:19-22

19Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. 21In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22And in Him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in His Spirit.

1 Peter 2:5

5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 13:14

14For here we do not have a permanent city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

Galatians 4:26

26But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.

Revelation 3:12

12The one who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will never again leave it. Upon him I will write the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from My God), and My new name.

John 14:2-3

2In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.

IXNT Application — Live as Citizens of Heavenly CityApplication
Believers exhorted to live as citizens of heavenly city: "But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 3:20)—present identity shapes conduct. Hebrews 11:10: Abraham "was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God." Hebrews 11:13-16: patriarchs "acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth... seeking a country of their own... longing for a better country, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them" (see TT 124 — Promised Land, which traces the Hebrews 11:10, 16 city texts). 1 Peter 2:11: "Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh." Colossians 3:1-4: "Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God"—heavenly-mindedness produces earthly holiness. Live now as future residents of New Jerusalem.
Texts
Philippians 3:20

20But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Hebrews 11:10-16

10For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11By faith Sarah, even though she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because she considered Him faithful who had promised. 12And so from one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. 13All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised. However, they saw them and welcomed them from afar. And they acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14Now those who say such things show that they are seeking a country of their own. 15If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were longing for a better country, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

1 Peter 2:11

11Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul.

Colossians 3:1-4

1Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

XEschatological Consummation — New Jerusalem DescendsEschatological Consummation
John sees "a new heaven and a new earth" (Revelation 21:1); "the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband" (21:2)—city descends, uniting heaven and earth. Voice declares: "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them" (21:3)—ultimate temple-city realized. City measures as perfect cube: "all its dimensions were equal—12,000 stadia in length and width and height" (21:16)—the same proportions the Most Holy Place is named and measured with at 1 Kings 6:16, 20, though the identification is inferred from the dimensions rather than stated in 21:16, meaning entire city is Most Holy Place. Yet paradox: "But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple" (21:22)—no localized temple because whole city IS temple; and it is this statement, not the cube, that carries the correspondence's retrospective warrant. Twelve gates with names of twelve tribes; twelve foundations with names of twelve apostles (21:12-14)—OT and NT united. River of life flows from throne; tree of life on both banks, "bearing twelve kinds of fruit," leaves "for the healing of the nations" (22:1-2)—Eden restored and escalated. "No longer will there be any curse" (22:3)—Genesis 3 curse removed. Servants "will see His face" (22:4)—unshielded divine presence; "they will reign forever and ever" (22:5)—Adamic dominion restored. Ultimate escalation: From garden-sanctuary → to city with temple → to cosmic temple-city filling new creation where God dwells with glorified humanity forever. Heaven and earth united; sacred and secular dissolved; all reality sanctified by God's presence. Trajectory consummated. CRITICAL: Rev 2:7 to Gen 2:9 Escalation demonstration - Eden's tree of life restored and universally accessible.
Texts
Revelation 21:1-22:5

5And the One seated on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." Then He said, "Write this down, for these words are faithful and true."

Revelation 21:2

2I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Revelation 21:16

16The city lies foursquare, with its width the same as its length. And he measured the city with the rod, and all its dimensions were equal—12,000 stadia in length and width and height.

Revelation 21:22

22But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

Four-Step Application

1. What You Must Do

You need a city with foundations whose architect and builder is God. You need belonging that transcends every earthly community, security that survives every destruction, home that no exile can revoke.

2. Why You Can't Do It

Every city you build crumbles — but impermanence is the symptom, not the disease. The disease is that you are barred. When Adam was driven out, God "stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life" (Genesis 3:24) — the canon's founding statement of barred access to God's presence. Every city built since has gone up on the wrong side of that sword. Babel fell. Jerusalem fell. Rome fell. Your own carefully constructed life will end in death — and even if it did not, you still could not walk into the Presence and live. You cannot build a lasting city because you are mortal, sinful, and finite; and you cannot enter the one City that lasts, because its whole glory is the unveiled Presence your sin cannot survive.

3. How He Did It

Jesus was the true temple destroyed and raised in three days (John 2:19-21). He "suffered outside the city gate, to sanctify the people by His own blood" (Hebrews 13:12), and entered the heavenly sanctuary as the one "where Jesus our forerunner has entered on our behalf" (Hebrews 6:20). The flaming sword fell on Him, so the way to the tree of life stands open. He prepares a place for us (John 14:2-3). He IS the New Jerusalem's temple (Revelation 21:22). The city descends because Christ ascended. Entrance is secured not by human construction but by divine gift.

4. How Through Him You Can

You are already a citizen of the heavenly Jerusalem — "you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God" (Hebrews 12:22), and "our citizenship is in heaven" (Philippians 3:20). But the City is not first a place; it is a Face. Its whole glory is its Guest: "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them" (Revelation 21:3), and "They will see His face" (Revelation 22:4), in a city that is itself all Most Holy Place. That coming sight — not a duty to endure — is what frees you now. Because a satisfying Face is coming, you can invest fully in earthly places without idolizing them: they were never the thing you actually wanted. Because a satisfying Face is coming, you can love deeply without demanding permanence, and build communities without needing them to last forever; every counterfeit loses its grip the moment the real thing is in view. And the city descends — "prepared as a bride adorned for her husband" (Revelation 21:2). A descending city cannot be earned, waited out, or performed into being; the bride's whole task is to be adorned, to be given to, and to gaze. So your task is not to build the city, and not merely to wait for it, but to want it — to live now as a citizen homesick for the Host, letting the sight that is certainly coming reorder what you love today.

From sight to savoring (2 Corinthians 3:18). The temple was never about the architecture; it was about access to the all-satisfying God. So this trajectory does not end in a place but in a Presence — and the unveiled sight of that glory, beholding it, is the very transformation the life-verse names: "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:18). Sight unto savoring; the beholding is the becoming.

Across the whole trajectory

Lexicon Findings

The New Jerusalem trajectory reveals systematic lexical continuity from Hebrew to Greek, tracing God's dwelling-place from Eden to eternity. The foundational Hebrew term is the place-name עֵדֶן (ʿÊden, H5731), which Strong's derives from the homonymous common noun עֵדֶן (ʿêden, H5730, "pleasure, delight, luxury")—so the garden is the garden of divine delight from which humanity was exiled after the Fall. That same ʿēden root supplies Psalm 36:8's "river of delights," one of the pre-prophetic river-at-the-sanctuary texts behind Stage 3. Eden's sanctuary function, however, is carried not by the word itself but by its features and by the dwelling/sanctuary vocabulary that follows. This pairs with מִקְדָּשׁ (miqdāš, H4720) and הֵיכָל (hêkāl, H1964) denoting sanctuary/temple, and קֹדֶשׁ (qōdeš, H6944) signifying holiness and separation. The crucial dwelling verb שָׁכַן (šākan, H7931), meaning "to tabernacle/dwell," connects Eden through the wilderness tabernacle to Solomon's temple, anticipating the Incarnation when the Word "tabernacled" (ἐσκήνωσεν) among us (John 1:14). Geographic terminology progresses redemptive-historically through עִיר (ʿîr, H5892, city), יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִם (Yᵉrûšālaim, H3389, Jerusalem), and צִיּוֹן (Ṣîyôn, H6726, Zion). Life-imagery connects via נָהָר (nāhār, H5104, river) flowing from Eden and חַי (ḥay, H2416, life/living water).

The NT employs πόλις (polis, G4172) for the eschatological city and Ἱερουσαλήμ (Hierousalēm, G2419) transliterating Jerusalem. Temple vocabulary commonly distinguishes ναός (naos, G3485, sanctuary) from ἱερόν (hieron, G2411, the wider temple precinct)—though John 2:20 uses the same ναός for the whole forty-six-year building. When Jesus declares His body is the ναός (John 2:19-21), He identifies His body as the true sanctuary; that it is the true Holy of Holies is theological inference, not the word's own sense. Dwelling terminology employs κατοικητήριον (katoikētērion, G2732, dwelling place, Ephesians 2:22), σκηνή (skēnē, G4633, tabernacle), and the verb σκηνόω (skēnoō, G4637, to tabernacle, Revelation 21:3). Revelation's climax features οὐρανός (ouranos, G3772, heaven) descending to earth, ποταμός (potamos, G4215, river of life), and ζωή (zōē, G2222, eternal life), fulfilling Eden's pattern at cosmic scale where God's presence permeates all reality.
