2 Chronicles 29:1 → 2 Kings 18:1

Allusion

Later text

2 Chronicles 29:1BSB

Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.

Earlier text

2 Kings 18:1BSB

In the third year of the reign of Hoshea son of Elah over Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz became king of Judah.

Significance

Both texts introduce Hezekiah's reign with the highest possible evaluation: "He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done" — the comparison to David being the ultimate commendation. Kings summarizes his reforms in a few verses (removing high places, breaking the bronze serpent). The Chronicler in 2 Chronicles 29 immediately launches into Hezekiah's temple restoration, which he began "in the first month of the first year of his reign" — a detail emphasizing that worship renewal was Hezekiah's absolute first priority. Chronicles devotes four full chapters (29-32) to material largely absent from Kings.

Redemptive-Historical Progression — Both verses open Hezekiah's reign, 2 Kings 18:1 with the accession synchronism and 2 Chronicles 29:1 repeating the same regnal data (twenty-five years old, a twenty-nine-year reign in Jerusalem, mother the daughter of Zechariah); the Chronicler takes up the earlier canonical account and advances it, pivoting at once to the reopening of the temple doors (29:3) so that the history of the Davidic house moves forward for the post-exilic community still awaiting the promised Son of David.
