Job 7:17BSB
What is man that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart upon him,
Psalm 8:4 asks "What is man (מָה־אֱנוֹשׁ, mah-enosh) that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for him?" in a tone of wonder at divine condescension. Job 7:17 uses the same formula — "What is man (מָה־אֱנוֹשׁ, mah-enosh) that You make so much of him, that You set Your heart on him?" — but in a tone of anguish, wishing God would stop scrutinizing him. The identical Hebrew question serves opposite emotional purposes: the psalmist marvels that the Creator of the cosmos attends to lowly humans; Job, in his suffering, finds God's relentless attention oppressive. This deliberate inversion reveals how the same theological truth — God's close attention to humanity — can be experienced as either glorious grace or unbearable pressure depending on the sufferer's circumstance.
