Isaiah 29:3 → 2 Samuel 5:6

Echo

Later text

Isaiah 29:3BSB

I will camp in a circle around you; I will besiege you with towers and set up siege works against you.

Earlier text

2 Samuel 5:6BSB

Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: "You will never get in here. Even the blind and lame can repel you." For they thought, "David cannot get in here."

Significance

Isaiah 29:3 declares "I will camp in a circle around you; I will besiege you with towers and set up siege works against you" — God Himself besieges Jerusalem, echoing the language of David's siege of Jebusite Jerusalem in 2 Samuel 5:6-9. The verb חָנָה (chanah, "to encamp/besiege") links both passages: David encamped against the city to conquer it for God's purposes, and now God encamps against the same city in judgment. The parallel is deliberately unsettling: the city David took from the Jebusites to make the LORD's dwelling now faces a siege conducted by the LORD Himself, because the inhabitants have become as resistant to God as the original Jebusites were to David.

Analogy — as David encamped against Jebusite Jerusalem to take it for God's purposes (2 Sam 5:6-9; cf. Isa 29:1, "the city of Ariel where David camped"), so the LORD now declares "I will camp in a circle around you": Isaiah patterns God's siege of Ariel on David's original siege, with the unsettling reversal that Zion's inhabitants now stand where the Jebusites stood — resisting the rightful King who comes against His own city.
