Echo

Later text

Daniel 12:2BSB

And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt.

Earlier text

Isaiah 66:24BSB

"As they go forth, they will see the corpses of the men who have rebelled against Me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never be quenched, and they will be a horror to all mankind."

Significance

Isaiah 66:24 describes the fate of the rebellious: "their worm will never die, their fire will never be quenched" (תּוֹלַעְתָּם לֹא תָמוּת וְאִשָּׁם לֹא תִכְבֶּה, tola'tam lo tamut ve'isham lo tikhbeh) — an image of unending judgment. Daniel 12:2 presents the corresponding dual-outcome eschatology: some awake "to everlasting life" but others "to shame and everlasting contempt" (לְדִרְאוֹן עוֹלָם, ledire'on olam). Both texts envision a final, permanent division between the righteous and the wicked, with the judgment of the wicked described as eternal. Isaiah provides the imagery (undying worm, unquenched fire); Daniel provides the framework (resurrection to dual destinies). Together they form the OT's most explicit witness to eschatological judgment.
