Hebrews 8:1-5
Greek Key Terms
- G5262 ὑπόδειγμα (hypodeigma) - "copy, example, pattern"; that which shows forth a pattern or serves as a model
- G4639 σκιά (skia) - "shadow, foreshadowing"; the outline cast by a substance, inferior to the reality
- G228 ἀληθινός (alethinos) - "true, genuine, real"; opposed to symbolic or counterfeit
Context: Hebrews 8:1-5 serves as the "main point" (κεφάλαιον, v. 1) summarizing chapters 5-7's argument for Christ's superior priesthood. The author declares: "We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven" (v. 1). This high priest "ministers in the sanctuary and true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man" (v. 2 — τῆς σκηνῆς τῆς ἀληθινῆς, the genuine tent). In contrast, the place where Levitical priests serve "is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven" (v. 5 — ὑπόδειγμα καὶ σκιά). To prove this, the author quotes Exodus 25:40, where Moses was warned to make everything according to the pattern shown on the mountain. The argument is straightforward: if the earthly sanctuary was built according to a heavenly pattern, then the heavenly is the original and the earthly the inferior copy.
OT-to-OT Development
- Exodus 25:9, 40; 26:30 establish the heavenly pattern principle—Moses shown the τύπος and commanded to replicate it exactly
- 1 Chronicles 28:11-19 shows David receiving temple plans "in writing by His hand upon me," demonstrating continuity of heavenly blueprint revelation
- Psalm 110:1, 4 prophesies a priest-king who sits at God's right hand and reigns as "a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek"
- Isaiah 6:1-4 grants the prophet a vision of the Lord enthroned in the heavenly temple with seraphim worshiping
Connections
- TO OT: Exodus 25:40 (quoted in v. 5); Psalm 110:1 (Christ seated at right hand); Numbers 12:7-8 (Moses faithful in all God's house)
- FROM NT:
- Hebrews 9:11 - Christ entered "the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands"
- Hebrews 9:24 - Christ entered "heaven itself," not copies
- Hebrews 12:22-24 - believers come to Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven
Christological Connection: Hebrews 8:1-5 explicitly identifies Christ as the High Priest who ministers in the heavenly sanctuary. He "sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven" (v. 1), fulfilling Psalm 110:1's prophecy. Unlike Levitical priests who stood daily offering repeated sacrifices, Christ sat down because his work is finished (cf. Heb 10:11-12). His ministry location—"heaven itself" (9:24)—proves the superiority of his priesthood. The earthly tabernacle pointed to this reality from its inception. Moses was shown the heavenly pattern (Exod 25:40); Christ entered the heavenly original. Owen's exposition emphasizes: "The entrance of Christ into heaven as our high priest was into it as the temple of God; wherein the chief thing considerable is the throne of grace" (Exposition of Hebrews, on 9:24).
Connection Method(s): Typology (Institutional, Forward-Looking), Contrast — this text articulates the antitype of the sanctuary institution given by pattern at Exodus 25:9, 40: Hebrews explicitly identifies Christ as the seated High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary (quoting Exod 25:40), contrasting His finished work with Levitical priests who stood daily offering repeated sacrifices in the earthly copy.
