Foundation Text
Luke 22:37
Greek Key Terms
- G5048 τελέω (teleo) - "to fulfill, accomplish, complete" - Scripture must be fulfilled in Jesus
- G3049 λογίζομαι (logizomai) - "to reckon, count, number" - The Servant reckoned/numbered with transgressors
- G459 ἄνομος (anomos) - "lawless, transgressor" - Criminals, lawbreakers
- G5056 τέλος (telos) - "end, goal" - What is written about Jesus reaches its fulfillment
Context: Luke 22:37 occurs during the Last Supper, just before Jesus's arrest. He instructs disciples to prepare for coming opposition, then explicitly quotes Isaiah 53:12, declaring this Scripture must be fulfilled in Him. This is Jesus's most explicit pre-passion self-identification with the Suffering Servant by direct quotation (Mark 10:45 states the atoning mission; here He names the text).
OT-to-OT Development
- Isaiah 53:12 concludes the fourth Servant Song: "He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors." Jesus quotes this verse to predict His crucifixion between criminals.
Connections
- TO (Earlier OT): Isaiah 52:13-53:12 (full Servant Song); Psalm 22:6-8 (mocked as evildoer)
- FROM OT (Later OT): N/A (Isaiah 53 is climactic)
- FROM NT:
- Mark 15:27-28 - crucified with two robbers
- Luke 23:32-33 - led with criminals
- John 19:18 - crucified between two others
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 - made to be sin
Christological Connection: Jesus was literally "numbered with the transgressors" when crucified between two criminals (Mark 15:27-28; Luke 23:32-33). But the theological significance runs deeper: "God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf" (2 Cor 5:21), so that He was treated as the ultimate transgressor though perfectly innocent. His numbering with transgressors was both literal (physical placement between criminals) and theological (bearing the legal guilt of sinners). Jesus's quotation of Isaiah 53:12 demonstrates His conscious fulfillment of the Servant role. He understood that Messianic glory comes through shameful death, exaltation through humiliation, vindication through condemnation. By quoting this verse hours before His arrest, Jesus shows His death was not tragedy but triumph—the planned fulfillment of prophetic Scripture. The innocent Servant willingly takes the place assigned to transgressors.
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment — Jesus explicitly quotes Isaiah 53:12 ("And He was numbered with the transgressors") and declares that "this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me," directly claiming the Suffering Servant prophecy as His own destiny hours before His arrest.
