Context: Revelation 5 depicts the heavenly throne room where only the Lamb who was slain is worthy to open the scroll of God's redemptive purposes. The four living creatures and twenty-four elders sing a new song (vv. 9-10), celebrating Christ's redemptive work: He purchased people "from every tribe and tongue and people and nation" and made them "a kingdom and priests to serve our God." This echoes Exodus 19:6 and fulfills it on a global, multiethnic scale.
OT-to-OT Development
- Exodus 19:6 - "You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation" - original covenant identity for Israel
- Isaiah 61:6 - "You will be called priests of the LORD, ministers of our God" - renewed priestly identity for restored Israel
- Daniel 7:14, 27 - "His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom... The kingdom and dominion... will be given to the saints of the Most High" - eschatological kingdom ruled by God's people
- Zechariah 14:16 - "All the survivors from all the nations... will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts" - nations worshiping the LORD
The OT trajectory shows covenant identity given to Israel (Exodus 19) → priestly identity renewed (Isaiah 61) → kingdom promised to saints (Daniel 7) → nations included (Zechariah 14) → multiethnic kingdom and priesthood fulfilled (Revelation 5).

Connection Method(s): Typology (Institutional, Backward-Looking), Promise-Fulfillment — Israel's calling as "a kingdom of priests" (Exod 19:6) is fulfilled in the multiethnic community purchased by the Lamb's blood, with decisive escalation from one nation to those "from every tribe and tongue and people and nation" (Rev 5:9) inheriting the royal-priestly identity. The direction is set by the donor: Exodus 19:6 is a conditional-present constitution carrying no prospective marker of its own, so the type is read backward from the NT vantage, while the forward force in this material belongs to the prophetic renewal of the priestly calling (Isa 61:6) and the promised kingdom of the saints (Dan 7:27).
Christological Connection: Christ the Lamb is the ultimate fulfillment of Exodus 19:6. He is the true King-Priest (Psalm 110:4; Zechariah 6:13; Hebrews 7:1-3), who through His blood purchases a people and shares His royal-priestly identity with them. The church's destiny to reign as kingdom and priests is grounded entirely in union with Christ, the Lion of Judah and Lamb who was slain. Exodus 19:6 finds its "Yes" in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20): through Him, believers from every nation inherit Israel's covenant calling and are constituted as a multiethnic kingdom of priests, fulfilling God's original purpose to fill the earth with His image-bearing, glory-mediating people (Genesis 1:26-28; Isaiah 6:3; Habakkuk 2:14).
