Hebrews 9:23-24

Greek Key Terms

  • G5262 ὑπόδειγμα (hypodeigma) - "copy, pattern, example"; that which represents or corresponds to something else
  • G2032 ἐπουράνιος (epouranios) - "heavenly, celestial"; belonging to or located in the heavenly realm
  • G499 ἀντίτυπον (antitypon) - "copy, antitype"; that which corresponds to the type (can mean either the copy of the original OR the reality prefigured by the type; here, the former)
  • G228 ἀληθινός (alethinos) - "true, genuine, real"; the actual reality as opposed to shadow or symbol

Context: Hebrews 9:23-24 provides the climactic statement of the earthly-heavenly sanctuary contrast. Verse 23 declares: "So it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these" (ὑποδείγματα; αὐτὰ δὲ τὰ ἐπουράνια). Verse 24 explains: "For Christ did not enter a man-made copy of the true sanctuary, but He entered heaven itself, now to appear on our behalf in the presence of God" (ἀντίτυπα; αὐτὸν τὸν οὐρανόν). This is the fullest NT statement of the two-sanctuary doctrine: earthly copies vs. heavenly originals, requiring corresponding sacrifices—animal blood for the shadows, Christ's blood for the realities.

OT-to-OT Development

  • Exodus 25:9, 40 established Moses was shown the heavenly pattern and commanded to build the earthly copy accordingly
  • Leviticus 16 describes the annual purification of the tabernacle and its furnishings with blood, demonstrating even the sacred required cleansing
  • Leviticus 16:16 explicitly states the sanctuary must be purified "because of the impurities and rebellious acts of the Israelites in regard to all their sins"
  • Isaiah 6:1-7 shows that even the heavenly temple required purification—the seraph touched Isaiah's lips with a coal from the altar to cleanse his iniquity

Connections

  • TO OT: Exodus 25:40 (earthly built according to heavenly pattern); Leviticus 16:15-19 (annual purification of sanctuary with blood); Isaiah 6:6-7 (purification by coal from heavenly altar)
  • FROM NT:
    • Hebrews 10:1 - "For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the realities themselves"
    • Hebrews 12:22-24 - believers come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, to God the judge of all, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant
    • Revelation 11:19 - "Then the temple of God in heaven was opened, and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple"

Christological Connection: Christ's entry into "heaven itself" (αὐτὸν τὸν οὐρανόν) is the climax of his high-priestly work. Owen writes: "And by this 'heaven itself,' a peculiar place is intended… the place of the peculiar residence of the presence, majesty, and glory of God, and of his throne." Christ did not merely enter a better earthly sanctuary—he entered the ultimate reality of which all earthly and visionary temples were shadows. He appears "in the presence of God" (τῷ προσώπῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ) on our behalf, presenting himself as the Lamb slain (Rev 5:6) to apply the benefits of his sacrifice. The earthly tabernacle required animal blood for purification; the heavenly required Christ's own blood. This demonstrates the infinite superiority of his sacrifice and the eternal efficacy of his priesthood.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Institutional, Forward-Looking), Contrast — this text articulates the antitype of the sanctuary institution given by pattern at Exodus 25:9, 40: Christ's entry into "heaven itself" (not a handmade copy) with His own blood (not animal blood) demonstrates the infinite superiority of His sacrifice and priesthood over the earthly tabernacle's purification rituals.
