Hebrews 11:4

Greek Key Terms

  • G4102 πίστις (pistis) - faith, trust, belief
  • G4119 πλείων (pleiōn) - more, greater — the comparative in "a better sacrifice than Cain did" (not κρείττων, which is the comparative at Hebrews 12:24)
  • G3844 παρά (para) - than (the comparative particle, shared with Hebrews 12:24)
  • G3140 μαρτυρέω (martyreō) - to bear witness, commend
  • G2378 θυσία (thysia) - sacrifice, offering
  • G2980 λαλέω (laleō) - to speak, say, utter

Context: Opening the great faith chapter with examples from creation onward, Hebrews presents Abel as first human exemplar: "By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous when God gave approval to his gifts. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead."

OT-to-OT Development

  • Genesis 4:4 - "The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering" (but Genesis doesn't explicitly mention "faith")
  • Hebrews interprets Abel's acceptable sacrifice as evidence of faith—brought what pleased God by trusting God's revelation
  • Pattern established: faith expresses itself through obedient offering of what God requires

Connections

  • TO: Genesis 4:2-4 - Abel's offering of firstborn with fat portions accepted by God
  • FROM OT: Hebrews 12:24 - Christ's blood "speaks a better word than the blood of Abel"
  • FROM NT: 1 John 3:12 - "Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother... because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous"

Christological Connection: Abel's faith-offering accepted by God stands in analogical relation to the believer's acceptance in Christ: faith is the spring in both, and the object of that faith is one — the sacrifice God Himself accepts. Where Abel "still speaks" through his faithful example, Christ speaks as living High Priest (Hebrews 7:25) and through His blood (Hebrews 12:24). What the verse does not say is what Abel's faith saw; the chapter's own frame supplies that, placing him among those who "died in faith, without having received the things they were promised," for whom "God had planned something better" (Hebrews 11:13, 39-40). Abel's witness transcends death through memory; Christ's witness transcends death through resurrection. Abel's blood still cries; Christ's blood still speaks — but speaks a better word.

Two comparatives, two different words. Abel's is "a better sacrifice than Cain did" — πλείων (G4119) + παρά; Christ's blood "speaks a better word than the blood of Abel" — κρείττων (G2909) + παρά (Hebrews 12:24). Only the particle is shared, so the two verses are not running the same construction, and neither comparison by itself decides the method.

Connection Method(s): Analogy + Contrast — Hebrews identifies Abel as the paradigmatic faith-witness whose testimony outlasts his death ("by faith he still speaks"), and sets his offering against Cain's; the relation to Christ is the analogy of faith-and-acceptance, alongside the verse's own Abel/Cain contrast. ANTI-DEFAULT CHECK: this is not Typology. The verse predicates offered-by-faith / commended-righteous / still-speaks, and no Lamb-object of Abel's faith; no New Testament text institutes Abel's sacrifice as a type of Christ's, and reading Abel's person as a type ("a faith-witness who transcends death") types a man rather than an appointed institution. The primeval sacrifice-rite that genuinely is a designed institutional type is owned Typology-primary by TT 136 — Sacrificial System, which carries Abel's Genesis 4:4 offering as a foundation node; this text cross-links that type rather than duplicating it.
